Beating the recession with TEFL!
Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 10:32 on 09 April 2010
The poor state of the economy means that today isn’t a good time to be looking for work in the UK. In Scotland, unemployment increased to 205,000 last month and despite fewer university places available, there was a 22.9% increase in the numbers of students applying for a place this year. Options seem few for those struggling to find work and more and more people are considering jobs abroad to escape the hugely competitive job market back home.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is one of the best ways of experiencing a country and you could earn a good wage at the same time. South East Asia is very popular with TEFL teachers and you could earn a monthly wage of £1500 in South Korea as well as being provided with free accommodation. Jobs are available around the world in South America, Asia and Europe and with 20,000 job adverts for TEFL teachers published every month there is clearly plenty of work available!
The basic requirement for these jobs is that you are a native English speaker. Most will require you to have a TEFL certificate which is where TEFL Scotland comes in. You can become a teacher ready to go out into the world after just a single weekend. TEFL Scotland’s 20-hour weekend course provides you with training from experienced tutors that will enable you to confidently teach English. TEFL Scotland also runs a variety of other courses to suit everyone – more details are available on the courses page.
If you are a resident in Scotland and earning under £22,000 you may be entitled to ILA which could contribute £200 towards your course, helping you to become qualified to beat the recession!
Anyone can become a TEFL teacher just as long as you are a native speaker! Some jobs require you to have a degree but there is plenty of work available for those who don’t so whether you’re a bricklayer or have a PhD in English, you can travel abroad and teach English. It can be the perfect way to see the world and secure yourself a wage during a difficult time for many and it will also help you develop skills that look fantastic on any CV!
Whether you want to make a significant contribution to a poor community in Ecuador or earn well and build up your savings in South Korea, teaching English abroad is a realistic option with an endless amount of opportunities. Make the change and do something different!
