Chile – A Host of Teaching English Opportunities in Chile
Posted by Sarah Bennett - 16:09 on 07 February 2012
I knew I wanted to teach in a Spanish speaking country but where? With so many vibrant and dynamic Hispanic countries to choose from I was having trouble narrowing down the options. In the end, I chose to teach in the magnificent country of Chile. Ultimately the deciding factor for me was the excellent and well-paying teaching opportunities in Chile.
Governmental push for English Education
There has been a strong push by the Chilean government to invest in English education. This has led to an influx of teaching English opportunities in Chile. Whether it´s teaching at a private language institute or in- company, your services will be in high demand
TEFL Courses Essential in a Competitive Environment
Increased demand for English teachers coupled with a high standard of living has made Chile a hot spot for teaching English. The flip side is that competition has also increased. Since the majority of the largest and best English institutes in the capital Santiago require a TEFL certification, a TEFL Scotland accreditation will give you that leg up.
A Variety of Opportunities
There are a variety of teaching opportunities in Chile to suit any taste. I taught English in Chile for close to three years and worked in language institutes, international private school and multinational companies. I started in language institutes in Santiago which were great places to become acclimatized to the Chilean culture. Within months I had made connections and lined up private classes. In one such experience I completed two contracts with a Canadian Mining company located in Northern Chilean Copper Capital, Antofagasta.
Teaching In- Company
Chile is an ideal country in which to teach in a company due to its well regulated business system and focus on English language staff training. The salaries can be fantastic due to the fact the companies often are eager to bring on board a native English teacher and have the budget to provide you with the financial support needed. On top of that once you get in with one company you will build connections with others. Working directly with a company is also a great way to become immersed in the culture and see on a day to day basis how the Chilean culture functions. My students at Quadra mine welcomed me as a fellow co - worker and invited me into their homes and their lives. In the end this experience has led to lasting friends.
Life Outside of the Classroom
Chile is a vibrant country rich with dramatic landscapes, historical sites and dynamic culture. You will have a fantastic work/life balance and a wealth of adventures and experiences inside and out of the classroom.
