Is a degree essential?

We are often asked both of the following questions:
1. Do I need a degree to do the course?
2. Do I need a degree to teach abroad?
The answer to the first question is no and the answer to the second is not necessarily.
To do a TEFL course with us you need no prior qualifications or experience – just the ability to speak English fluently and enthusiasm about teaching!
However, without a degree you will not be able to teach in some countries. For example, South Korea and China require you to have a degree in order to obtain a work permit and therefore work legally in the country. Working illegally can result in a lifetime ban from entering the country and a hefty fine or prison sentence – something that’s best avoided!
While some countries specify that a degree is essential there are many other countries around the world where all you need is a TEFL qualification to start teaching. In Europe, with the exception of Greece, no degree is required to teach English.
If you are interested in teaching in a specific country then do your research and find out what the requirements are for you to work there legally. Remember that you don’t need any qualifications or experience to do our courses and there are plenty of countries worldwide that don’t require you to have a degree!

“Our tutor made us feel at ease while still filling us full of information and providing us with the skills we may need for teaching in almost any situation. The whole weekend was better (and less scary!) than expected.” Laura Haig, Fife
