Get a TEFL job in the recession
Posted by Joe Hallwood - 09:29 on 19 August 2009
Economic downturn, recession, depression, it doesn't really matter what the term is if you haven't got a job.
At this time of year, it is perhaps a little worse as the number of job seekers increase with University graduates and school leavers all looking for something. This has been reflected in the huge increase in the number of enquiries we have had in TEFL courses and TEFL jobs abroad.
When I left university, it wasn't that easy to get a job either since there was a recession on back then too. I found one though, but it must have been one of the most boring jobs on the planet. However, since I had a sizeable overdraft to pay off, needs must. Seeing as I had actually found a job, it was a little risky to leave that job and go to work in Greece.
But, that's what I did. I left that job for someone else to have, how altruistic of me. I figured, if I have to pay off an overdraft, better to do it from Greece than Hull.
Then, like now, working abroad is a realistic option not just for graduates, but for anyone who is suffering from the economic climate. It means you can be gainfully employed rather than settling for job queues or jobs that you would never take on normally (think tax office in Hull). As such, your CV looks more inspiring, you gain new skills and can return when things look a lot brighter. Plus, you get a memorable experience of living and working
abroad.
