Holiday TEFL Lesson Ideas
Posted by Amy Hanson - 13:30 on 25 January 2011
TEFL teachers often find that using British holidays and customs can provide ideas for English lessons. Bonfire Night, Shrove Tuesday, and even Christmas and New Year can fascinate younger learners, while helping them learn new vocabulary and practice their English skills. You can work these holidays into an existing lesson plan, like those found in our TEFL Teacher’s Pack.
Jan’s TEFL story tells of how her students always remember the hot cross buns she would bring in as a British tradition when doing TEFL in France. Sometimes celebrating holidays with your students can even help you feel a bit closer to home when you are teaching English abroad!
Here’s a blog post about using Burn’s Night with pre-intermediate English students including a video and a gap fill exercise – Free English Lessons Online .
With more confident and able students, you could perhaps stage your own Burns Night as a classroom activity. Have a team of boys and a team of girls write a speech together for the Toast to the Lassies and the reply. Students could also read and discuss a Burns poem – though better to choose one of the ones in English rather than in Scots, such as My Love is Like A Red Red Rose.

“Joe was very engaging in his presentation style. I particularly enjoyed the Greek lesson as it gave us a taster of how our students will experience our class as well as showing how easily a non-native speaker can pick up another language without the use of the native language.” Alison Munro, Perth
