Moving Abroad to be a TEFL teacher
Posted by Jennifer MacKenzie - 16:39 on 17 September 2009
While browsing the web recently I noticed a handy little tool that I thought may be of use to any of you who are moving lock, stock and barrel abroad to teach English and not just going down the how much can I shove in my rucksack route.
Having been down both routes I know just how hard it can be moving all your wordly belongings from one country to the next. On my initial venture out to Greece for my first position I went only with one rucksack (admittedly a very large rucksack) and a piece of hand luggage. By the second flight out after the Christmas holidays I was taking out another two large suitcases plus the rucksack (oh for the days before paying per bag!), and on it continued every trip home to Scotland until finally all my wordly belongings were with me in Greece and I was settled there teaching TEFL in a small mountain town in Greece. Living and working abroad as I had always dreamt...
Therefore, it must be time for a new dream and off to France I went. This time there were no flights it was all over land. Over land in a red Bedford midi van with my lovely handmade Greek sofa (all the way from Thessaloniki, the man in the shop told me) on the roof! Across the Adriatic by ferry and through tunnels in Swiss mountains all the way to the flatlands of Picardie, France and the world of teaching Business English in France.
When it came to moving from France, van hire was the only way to go with family coming over from the South of England with one vehicle and the trusty red van doing it's job once again, transporting me and my life to another country.
The organisation needed in moving house is phenomonal but moving house, TEFL job and country all at the one time can be overwhelming. Crown Relocations have created a free to use tool where you type in your details and the website automatically send you reminders of important tasks to complete in the run-up to your move. www.moveoverseas.co.uk/mymove. You never know, it may make things easier. Good luck anyway, if I can do it I'm sure you can.

“Great teaching style, quick moving, all activities were examples of teaching techniques. Very approachable tutor, good fun, didn't feel like long days, great to take part and watch all lessons.” Fiona Amy, Physiotherapist, Edinburgh
