Teaching English in Algeria

Teaching in Algeria can be challenging due to the problems within the education system but the country is doing its best to overcome these difficulties. English is now an important part of the curriculum and there are more jobs for TEFL teachers becoming available. A quarter of the nation’s budget goes towards education and the drive for accessibility has resulted in a 97% attendance rate for boys between six and sixteen and a 91% attendance rate for girls. The country now wants to focus on the quality of education and increase literacy which currently stands at 70%.
The average salary for an English teacher in a state school is about $600 but in higher education this could be as much as $1000. Some schools may offer accommodation – most likely private language schools – and some may even provide meals, however, food is generally very cheap in Algeria so it won’t eat (no pun intended!) into your budget too much if you need to buy your own food.
Living costs are low so will be able to live comfortably as well as have money to travel around the country. Taxis, trains and buses are all reasonably affordable ways to get about however it is recommended that you book a taxi by phone rather than flag one down in the street and book buses in advance. Even though the Sahara desert covers an impressive 85% of the country there is plenty else to see other than desert! There are numerous water sports available along the coastline in the North, many good quality restaurants across the country and nomadic tribes which reside in the desert.
