Teaching English in Austria

UK internationals have the right to live and work freely in any EU country so working in Austria is generally hassle free but for non-EU citizens getting into the country to work can be very difficult and involves a considerable amount of red tape. A work permit, however, is not required if you are self-employed and taking classes of no more than five students. Most schools look to employ people who are TEFL qualified and have a university degree and it can be handy to have some grasp of German although this is not essential.
Austria is one of the safest countries in Europe and has a very low crime rate. The country is full of castles and beautiful architecture which has largely been left undamaged by WWII so you can really get a feel for a different era. Eating out and going for a drink is slightly cheaper than doing so in the UK but generally, living costs in Austria are in line with the rest of Europe and are not particularly cheap.
Austrians are very hospitable people and also very sociable – many spend their weekends going out to cafes, bars and restaurants or shopping or skiing. There is plenty to do and see when in Austria and many quickly fall in love with its beauty and the people.
