Teaching English in Bolivia
Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 16:40 on 01 April 2010
Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America so there is a lot of teaching work to be found in the volunteer sector. English is considered an important language to learn and people in Bolivia are keen to pick it up. Any paid work will not allow you to save or have much to spend on luxuries but considering living costs are very low you should manage to get by.
Bolivia does not have a booming tourist industry which can give an English teacher the opportunity to immerse themselves completely in traditional culture and experience a country that does not cater to western preferences. This is ideal for the serious traveller who wants to experience a completely different way of life without the distraction of a prominent tourist industry.
The capital, La Paz, is the highest capital city in the world and some can take a while to adjust to the altitude. The climate is damp and warm during the summer season which is between November and March and cooler and drier from May to September – the winter season. Spending time with the locals and building relationships will open up many social activities to you and Bolivian festivals are often a highlight for many visitors to the country!

“Our tutor made us feel at ease while still filling us full of information and providing us with the skills we may need for teaching in almost any situation. The whole weekend was better (and less scary!) than expected.” Laura Haig, Fife
