Teaching English in Bulgaria

The organisation Teachers for Central and Eastern Europe is based in Sofia and is most active in Bulgaria. The Ministry of Education & Science organises teaching positions for native English speakers in Bulgaria and TFCEE employs up to 80 people each year on behalf of the department. The salary is about $130 which is more than Bulgarian teachers typically make and accommodation is paid for along with free healthcare, classes in Bulgarian, 60 days paid holiday and paid sick leave.
Considering that The Ministry of Education & Science organises positions for native English speakers, contacting schools yourself is unlikely to result in much success. There is not a huge amount of work in the private sector which is generally quite rudimentary however, the Greek company Strategakis has a network of schools for foreign languages and computing in the country. There are also thirty Pharos schools in Bulgaria.
Living costs in Bulgaria are low as the economy is still developing. For example, a good meal can cost between EUR 5-7, a bottle of beer less than EUR 1 and most food and drink you can buy in supermarkets is substantially cheaper than elsewhere in the world. Crime in Bulgaria is very low and the Bulgarians are warm and friendly. Many people are drawn to Bulgaria because of its climate and the interesting history of the country which makes Bulgaria a truly fascinating place to discover.
