Teaching English in Cyprus

Cyprus has a small population of just 780,000, therefore there isn’t a huge amount of teaching positions available for native English speakers. English is prominent in the country where most signs are printed in English as well as Greek and so learning English is greatly desired amongst the Cypriots. In order to teach in state schools in Cyprus you need a degree relevant to the subject you wish to teach and you will also need to be well versed in Greek. For those that don’t meet these requirements work can be found in private language schools where most native English speakers search for jobs and a TEFL certificate will likely be needed. Working in private language schools means that you will probably be working during afternoons and evenings.

Schools usually offer a contract of 20-25 working hours per week and the hourly pay of C£7 is relatively high compared to the rest of Southern Europe. Most schools offer two paid holidays each year: two weeks at Christmas and two over the Greek Orthodox Easter.

Living costs in Cyprus are reasonable with a good apartment costing C£150 per month and eating out usually costs C£3-10 for one person. Considering English is widely used in Cyprus it is easy for any British national to settle in and quickly become comfortable in a new environment – this however may be off-putting for more adventurous types who want to experience entirely different ways of living.
