Teaching English during your Gap Year
Posted by Sarah Bennett - 17:16 on 15 February 2012
A Gap year is a great way to travel, embark on adventures and explore new options before entering University. My Gap “year” between my Undergraduate Degree and Masters Degree was such a great experience I decided to extend it for close to three years.
Taking a Gap year is an ideal option to clear your mind, re-evaluate your priorities and learn about yourself. The experiences you have while teaching English abroad can also greatly impact your direction in University. To top it off while you are having a life-changing experience you are also getting paid!
Right now is a great time to take a Gap year teaching English because TEFL Scotland courses are ILA funded. If you are above 16 years of age, earn less than £22,000 and are a Scottish citizen you are eligible to receive £200 towards a TEFL certification. This is will cover the basic TEFL certification course. From my personal teaching experience, I suggest upgrading for a more in depth course to achieve the full benefits of completing a TEFL certification.
Teaching English abroad is a great option for your Gap year because it is so flexible. The majority of English institutes will not expect you to sign a contract for more than one year. Often you can teach in one location for three months and then move on to an entirely different location.
From large cities to small villages native English teachers are in high demand. Whether you are interested in living in a vibrant metropolitan city like Santiago, or a sweet historic town like Temuco in Southern Chile there are a variety of English teaching opportunities to suit your taste.
TEFL certificates are becoming essential for teaching English abroad. Not only are they a requirement in the majority of English language schools, but the knowledge and skills you learn during the course are critical to teaching an effective and engaging class. While I was given a basic level of English training from my employers in Chile, it was expected that you already possessed a solid understanding of English grammar and teaching techniques.
If you are ready to launch into your Gap year teaching English, get your essential TEFL certification with TEFL Scotland. Check out the TEFL Scotland website, for course options and English teaching job vacancies.
Plus with the FREE ILA funding you’ve got nothing to lose.

“I am writing to let you know that I have been here, in Togliatti in Russia, for almost a year now! My visa has just been renewed for another year (annual renewal process) and I have been given a 3 year contract. All this is down to one simple fact - TEFL! After doing my weekend course in Edinburgh and the 50 hour Language and Grammar, I suddenly had opportunities that were closed to me in the past. Now I have so many interesting and exciting memories of my time here. Every day has been an adventure and has certainly kept me on my toes! The Togliatti Chamber of Commerce have invited me to speak at the opening of their new tourist initiative! I helped design the website for one of my students, and next thing I knew I had received an invitation to speak at their prestigious event. ” Colin, currently teaching in Russia
