Teaching English Edinburgh to Ghana
Posted by Fiona Amy - 18:22 on 08 December 2008
I did my 2 day TEFL course last weekend (1st/2nd Nov) in Edinburgh. I am 29 (just... I was 28 last weekend!!!) and I am a physiotherapist.
I am going to Ghana in January to volunteer at a primary school in Ejura. I wanted to gain a little experience and insight in to what teaching in a different country might involve so I applied to go on the weekend TEFL course. I wasn't very sure who or what to expect and was slightly concerned about the long days but it turned out to be a very positive experience!!
I never thought that an 11 hour day of learning could be quite so fun and enjoyable!! We were a class of 18 very like-minded people and Joe, our teacher, made the days so interactive and amusing that they just flew by!! Joe made it very easy to learn and shared so much of his own experience that I now feel that I can go more confidently to Ghana with lots of great ideas and a slightly better understanding of English grammar!!!
The course has definately inspired me to think about doing more TEFL learning with a view to spending a longer period abroad teaching English.....well we'll see how I get on in Ghana!!! I have promised Joe that I will keep in touch and let you all know how I am getting on. I leave on the 9th Jan and school starts on the 15th!!!

“Our tutor made us feel at ease while still filling us full of information and providing us with the skills we may need for teaching in almost any situation. The whole weekend was better (and less scary!) than expected.” Laura Haig, Fife
