TEFL courses and jobs for teaching English abroad

Teaching English in Estonia

There are five ranks for teachers in Estonia – the higher the rank the higher the pay and for anyone with no previous teaching experience they will be put in the lowest rank. Therefore, having previous teaching experience before going to Estonia can be advantageous in securing a better wage. English is considered an important language to learn and students are generally interested in learning as they recognise that many jobs require them to speak a second language. This means that there are many jobs for TEFL teachers in Estonia, particularly in the capital Tallinn. You will need a TEFL qualification in order to teach in the country but a degree is not usually necessary.

Airfares and health insurance are sometimes provided but this very much depends on the school you are applying for. Salaries are usually about 1,000 Euros but this can be higher depending on your qualifications – at any rate, your salary will be above the cost of living and Estonia is one of the cheapest countries to live in in Europe. However, you shouldn’t expect to save much money.

Most TEFL teachers find it easier to find work while in the country and considering the cheap cost of living you won’t be spending a huge amount of money as you try to find a job. If you are an EU resident then you only need a work permit but you will need to get a visa if you are from outside the EU – thankfully employers generally tend to take care of these processes which will save you from a lot of lengthy paperwork!

Hi Amine, I think it may be hard to find work in Estonia in TEFL if you are not a native English speaker. It would be worth contacting the the British Council in Talinn for further information.
