Teaching English in Finland
Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 15:13 on 23 March 2010
Swedish is officially Finland’s second language but English is certainly not far behind with much of the demand coming from the business classes. English is taught all across the country in every kind of institute –unless you have a good deal of experience it is unlikely that you will find a job teaching English to business people in private language schools but work can be found elsewhere. Many parents send their children to private kindergartens which sometimes hire native English speakers as long as they have experience working with children.
Most teachers work freelance but if you are lucky enough to get a contract job then help may be given help with finding accommodation and receive travel expenses. Teaching in Finland generally pays quite well with some positions paying €1,500 per month and freelance teachers can expect to earn €20 per lesson. However, the living costs in Finland are, like other Scandinavian countries, quite high.
There is plenty to do in the capital, Helsinki, which has over 35 museums and art galleries and numerous sporting facilities. The South of Finland gets about six hours of sunshine during winter while Lapland, in the North, gets as little as four. However, despite the dark winters there are many bars, clubs, restaurants and cafes in the city which are buzzing throughout the year regardless of the season. Some schools compress teaching into four days so this gives you an extended weekend in order to explore more of the country!
