Teaching English in Ghana

English is the official language of Ghana but for most people it is not their first language. Different tribes speak different languages and need to communicate between each other using English, therefore learning English is greatly important in Ghanian schools. Jobs for teaching English in Ghana exist almost entirely in volunteer work and there are many organisations around the world which send out volunteers. Some of these organisations require you to pay a monthly fee for food and accommodation while others may only require you to pay for the flights there and back.

The vast majority of people find teaching in Ghana (along with many other African countries) to be hugely rewarding. Most teachers teach a variety of subjects such as English, maths and science to disadvantaged children who are eager to learn about whatever you have to say. Understandably, teaching resources in most schools are limited so it might be a good idea to try and bring out as many materials as you can to help you with your classes – you will certainly need to use some creativity in the classroom!

The people in Ghana are well known for being kind and friendly and a lot of volunteers live with Ghanian families during the period of their work. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who loves to experience different cultures – living with a Ghanian family means being a part of the community and getting to know just exactly what life is like in the country.
