Teaching English in Hong Kong
Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 16:58 on 17 March 2010
The Hong Kong government employs hundreds of native English speakers to work in government schools across Hong Kong and these registered teachers can expect to earn £1,220 or more as well as receiving generous benefits. Without an official contract it is probable that you will be working for a poor hourly rate. It isn’t as easy for British nationals to go out and work in Hong Kong as it used to be so it is important that you research exactly how you are going to find work and sort out the red tape. However, teachers with a university degree, experience and a sponsorship will have no difficulty obtaining a work permit.
Accommodation in Hong Kong’s busiest areas is incredibly expensive unless you are willing to stay in a hostel. Sharing a flat can cost as much as £1,000 a month but a more attractive price for accommodation can be found on the islands such as Lamma and Lantau where flats or houses can cost about £400 per month. However, this option requires up to an hour of commuting each day but transport is cheap and plentiful.
While renting a flat can be expensive food, clothes and travel are certainly not and therefore going out is fairly inexpensive. Eating out is popular with the locals so you shouldn’t have a problem meeting plenty of new people and Hong Kong is positively bustling with things to do such as sports, restaurants and cinema that are cheap and accessible.

“Joe was very engaging in his presentation style. I particularly enjoyed the Greek lesson as it gave us a taster of how our students will experience our class as well as showing how easily a non-native speaker can pick up another language without the use of the native language.” Alison Munro, Perth
