Teaching English in China

As China’s economy rapidly expands, the demand for English teachers is exploding, as China wants to learn the language of the West. For two decades now there has been a steady stream of native English speakers to China. Going to teach in a place like China offers such a rich cultural experience and also the opportunity to learn about the Mandarin language, history and endless range of exotic foods.
The average salary for a foreign English teacher is between 4,500 and 6000 RMB per month. This is high by local standards. The salaries may be lower in the smaller cities, but so will the cost of living and accommodation. Teaching English in China is considered a year long job, and there are constantly positions becoming available. Schools particularly prefer to hire during September or October, in accordance with the academic year. Many schools now have a probationary period for teachers, which can be anything from two to ten weeks. Getting a work permit is now a lot easier than it used to be, but care has to be taken to ensure that you get your work visa fixed up before your tourist permit (which expires after 3 months) runs out.
To experience China at its best you really need to immerse yourself in it! From the history of the rural countryside to the hustle and bustle of the busy cities of Beijing and Shanghai, there is an experience to be had in every reach of this vast country. A visit to the Great Wall is a must, and perhaps a visit to the stunning Guilin on the Li river with the breathtaking mountains and crystal clear waters.

“I am writing to let you know that I have been here, in Togliatti in Russia, for almost a year now! My visa has just been renewed for another year (annual renewal process) and I have been given a 3 year contract. All this is down to one simple fact - TEFL! After doing my weekend course in Edinburgh and the 50 hour Language and Grammar, I suddenly had opportunities that were closed to me in the past. Now I have so many interesting and exciting memories of my time here. Every day has been an adventure and has certainly kept me on my toes! The Togliatti Chamber of Commerce have invited me to speak at the opening of their new tourist initiative! I helped design the website for one of my students, and next thing I knew I had received an invitation to speak at their prestigious event. ” Colin, currently teaching in Russia
