Teaching English in Vietnam

Teaching English abroad is a unique experience in any country, but perhaps no more so than
in Vietnam. Vietnam offers an exciting opportunity for TEFL teachers to work in one of the most beautiful countries in Southeast Asia. With a growing economy, English language teaching in Vietnam has become extremely important over the past several years.
The Vietnamese people live a life that is very much influenced by the past. Along this 1,600km-long country, TEFL teachers can enjoy the natural beauty of Vietnam’s coastal beaches, inland mountains and complex river systems, while also experiencing a charming traditional culture that continues to evolve as the country opens itself to the outside world.
TEFL opportunities
The vast majority of people teaching English in Vietnam do so at universities as English is a popular source of study for Vietnamese university students. As a native English speaker the chances are you will be a highly valued member of the faculty. Although universities are the number one job market for TEFL teachers in Vietnam, they are not the only option. It is possible to get a job as a private English tutor in Vietnam, or as a teacher of part-time conversational classes. Many Vietnamese adults choose to learn English and attend evening classes by choice and native-speaking teachers are always in demand. This is a great way to meet local people and find out more about them and their way of life.
Living in Vietnam
As a TEFL teacher in Vietnam, you will essentially be considered a citizen. The cost of accommodation will vary widely between small villages and large capital cities. Although big cities may be more expensive in terms of costs of living, they will also offer more opportunities for teaching positions. In general living in Vietnam is pretty cheap and you can eat fantastic food locally at small prices.
The city of Hanoi, in northern Vietnam, is the main governmental seat of the country, the area around Hanoi and bordering China is influenced heavily by Chinese culture. If you travel further downs south in Vietnam to Ho Chi Minh City you will discover smaller villages and a greater mix of people and cultures. An easy way to get around in Vietnam is on bicycle. If your work place and your home are too far apart to walk you may want to consider investing in a bicycle during your time teaching English in Vietnam
The Vietnamese people are well known for the friendly and welcoming nature and many TEFL teachers are attracted to Vietnam because of this. You’ll find your Vietnamese student to be open minded, accepting, with a sense of fairness. All of which makes teaching English in Vietnam a more rewarding and fulfilling experience.
Requirements
In order to teach English in Vietnam you will need at least 120 hours of TEFL training. We recommend taking one our Premier TEFL Courses as this will enhance your job prospects significantly.
