Teaching English in India

Opportunities for teaching English in India are generally on a volunteer basis and there is plenty of work available for anyone with a desire to teach in the country. A degree and a TEFL certificate are typically required if you want to find paid work but be warned, competition can be fierce but with English becoming increasingly more important in the business world, more work is becoming available.
The quality of English education at school level in India is poor despite the fact that children are taught it usually about six periods a week for six years. Children are taught how to pass exams rather than effectively speak the language and therefore knowledge of grammar is quite high but conversational skills are very poor. TEFL teachers have an opportunity to introduce children to different ways of learning and improving their skills at speaking the language.
The low cost of living and cultural diversity are just two factors which draw people to the country. Accommodation can be expensive but almost everything else is extraordinarily cheap – even tailored clothes. Indians are generally very warm and friendly people and being a foreigner in the country you’re likely to attract a lot of interest. Depending on where you are in the country, a lot of Indians have family who have relocated to the west and therefore are very interested in where you have come from and what life is like back home.
