Teaching English in Indonesia

In order to obtain a work visa in Indonesia, the government requires you to be TEFL qualified and some schools require you to have a university degree. Usually, though, the most important thing is that you show enthusiasm for the job and come across as friendly and genuine in an interview.
Considering the low living costs, your salary will go far in Indonesia and if you live quite conservatively you can put a decent amount of money away into savings but compared to the rest of South East Asia, Indonesia tends to pay TEFL teachers less. Most schools supply accommodation but it is a good idea to check it out before signing any contract or even looking for a housing allowance instead which will give you more freedom. In fact, make sure you fully read any contract before signing it – you don’t want to find out that you unknowingly signed up to work alternate weekends!
The country is made up of over 17,000 islands and home to 300 different ethnic groups making it hugely diverse culturally – the national motto is “Unity in Diversity”. English is poorly spoken in some areas and you may find it necessary to attempt to pick up a bit of the language to make your life easier when it comes to buying food, etc.
