Teaching English in Kazakhstan
Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 14:44 on 07 April 2010
There seems to be a growing market for English teachers in Kazakhstan since the government decided in 2007 to put English at the top of education spending. In schools in Kazakhstan the government wants to see a high level of Russian and English taught making the young people of the country trilingual. With Kazakhstan’s ever-improving economy it is understandable that the government sees a need for English speakers in order to properly integrate into the global economy.
This initiative is good news for English teachers who can find some well paid jobs in the country which come with some great benefits including free accommodation and paid airfare. The good jobs require a degree and a TEFL certificate and while many exist in the major cities there are also English teachers needed in the country.
However, living costs in Kazakhstan can be far from cheap but if you secure yourself a decent job you should be able to get by fine. Being a native English speaker you will undoubtedly receive many requests just when walking about to teach people English and hosting conversationalist groups can be a great way of meeting new people. Be sure to make the effort to understand the culture and trying to pick up even a little of the language will go a long way to helping you make friends. Like travelling to any country its good manners to respect the culture of the country you are in and do your best to make sure you don’t offend.

“Joe was very engaging in his presentation style. I particularly enjoyed the Greek lesson as it gave us a taster of how our students will experience our class as well as showing how easily a non-native speaker can pick up another language without the use of the native language.” Alison Munro, Perth
