Teaching English in Kenya

The high demand for English-speaking teachers means that there is a lot of voluntary work to be found in Kenya but there are also opportunities for paid work. However, the wages of any of these paid positions would only just allow you to get by – the school will normally provide accommodation (which would probably be a mud hut) and you wouldn’t be able to spend money on ‘luxury food’ (eg. Peanut butter).

It isn’t easy to get the work permit needed to legally work in Kenya and you will need a university degree, a TEFL certificate and a sufficient amount of experience. Most people go out to Kenya on volunteer programmes which can cost about $4,000 (excluding flights) for several months depending on the organisations and most state that there are no requirements for these volunteer positions.

The children you will teach are enthusiastic about learning English and you will need to be enthusiastic about teaching it considering the long working hours and class sizes that can be over one hundred! If you’re lucky enough to be able to travel during your time off then there is plenty to experience such as Mt. Kilimanjaro and gorgeous beaches.
