Teaching English in Latvia

Working in Latvia can be a highly rewarding experience due to the amount of respect students have for their teachers. Many people find Latvians to be warm and kind and students to be enthusiastic about learning.
Citizens of most European countries can work in Latvia without a work permit or visa. Anyone from outside Europe can obtain a visa to stay in the country for 90 days but will need a work permit in order to legally work in the country – this can be a lengthy process, involving a lot of paperwork as well as some money.
The average wage is about $700 per month but this can vary greatly with some schools paying quite well and including accommodation and others not paying so well and not including accommodation. It is important to find out a bit about the reputation of the school you are applying to before you sign any contracts. TEFL qualified teachers should not have too much of a problem finding work and a degree will greatly help as well. Most jobs exist in the capital, Riga, with few available elsewhere in the country.
Prices are generally quite cheap but with Riga becoming a fairly popular destination for stag and hen parties due to cheap flights prices have certainly risen in recent times. The average wage will allow you to live simply and Latvia isn’t the place to go if you want to put money away in the bank – any money you earn you will be spending in the country!
Winters in Latvia last from about October to April and the temperatures can get so cold that pavements crack! Summers are short and cool so Latvia isn’t the place to go if you’re looking for a year-round warm climate!

“Our tutor made us feel at ease while still filling us full of information and providing us with the skills we may need for teaching in almost any situation. The whole weekend was better (and less scary!) than expected.” Laura Haig, Fife
