Teaching English in Lithuania

There are plenty of job opportunities for TEFL teachers in Lithuania as English is now the most desired second language to have. Respect for teachers is something embedded in the culture and you can expect to be teaching attentive and often enthusiastic students despite the poor resources available in many courses.

Prices in the country have greatly increased in the past few years and teachers can find it difficult to get by on the wages which are on average about 1800 – 2200 litas. There are also many teachers who complain about the amount of paperwork they are expected to do by schools and the amount of time that takes up. Teaching freelance is likely to be very difficult to do if you are not long in the country – you will need recommendations in order to teach privately and in order to do this you will need to know people in the country first of all!

Teaching in Lithuania is probably better suited to TEFL teachers who have some experience teaching in a foreign country. The price increases mean that you can’t spend money extravagantly and will have to be careful to make sure your wage will cover everything you need. Finding accommodation outside the capital and being careful about how much you spend when going out for dinner or a drink are good ways of getting the most out of your wages and considering all of this it isn’t likely that you’ll be saving much money!
