Teaching English in Malaysia
Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 09:55 on 08 April 2010
There is certainly a demand for English teachers in Malaysia which is one of the most developed countries in South East Asia. In fact, the Malaysian government had to end a scheme which involved using English to teach maths and science in state schools because suitable teaching staff could not be found. As this scheme is phased out, the focus will be on separate English language and 14,000 English teachers are to be recruited by 2012. While it is uncertain whether or not there will be enough English language teachers to fill these posts, the next few years could be a great time to find work for any TEFL teacher with a desire to teach in Malaysia.
Wages can vary from RM1500-6000 ($400 - $1600) but getting by on less than RM2000 can be more of a struggle. It is possible to secure a job before you enter the country but most employers would prefer to interview you before making up their mind so you may have to travel to the country and visit the schools in person.
Living costs in Malaysia are very low even in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Accommodation is generally not too expensive and food, drink and clothes are much cheaper than back in the UK. English is widely spoken in the capital although not always well but you shouldn’t have much difficulty communicating with the locals.
In Malaysia you will experience a diverse culture as the country is home to Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous tribes. You can also easily visit surrounding countries with buses and trains to Singapore and Thailand being accessible and affordable and there is plenty to see in the country itself which has a tropical climate and a beautiful landscape.

“Joe was very engaging in his presentation style. I particularly enjoyed the Greek lesson as it gave us a taster of how our students will experience our class as well as showing how easily a non-native speaker can pick up another language without the use of the native language.” Alison Munro, Perth
