Teaching English in Morocco

Teaching English in Morocco is unlikely to earn you much money and teachers often describe the work there as difficult and challenging. A work permit can be obtained after entering the country but you will need to provide copies of your university degree, TEFL certificate, birth certificate and other relevant papers. By law, no more than 50% of a workforce in a company (or school) in Morocco can be made up of foreigners – this was an attempt by the government to boost employment in the country by discouraging the employment of foreigners. However, finding work in Morocco is said to not be too difficult but what is difficult is finding good, well paid work.
Job satisfaction is variable – some find the students wonderful which more than makes up for poor wages while others find that their employers are taking advantage and the wages are insufficient. It is hugely important to research any school you are applying to and make sure that if you are offered a contract that you actually get it!
The vast majority of people, however, find that travelling in Morocco is fantastic and some go into teaching English in Morocco just to stay in the country. If you want to work in Morocco then you will need to have determination and weigh up the pros and cons – remember, just because one person has had a bad experience teaching somewhere doesn’t mean you will! Just approach schools with caution and work out their reputation and don’t just accept the first job offer you get!
