Teaching English in Portugal

There is a great demand for English tuition in Portugal; the advancing economy has resulted in more of a demand to speak English especially in business and most parents wish their children to have English as their second language. Therefore there is plenty of work teaching English in Portugal. The majority of teachers in Portugal find their work through advertisements in the educational press or through International House. However, there are several other paths to employment across Portugal such as through the Cambridge Schools group which employs up to 100 native English speakers each year.
For EU nationals, working in Portugal is fairly straightforward and all you need is a residence permit after three months. The average salary for English teachers in Portugal is €700- €1,000 per month and while generally wages may be considered low, Portugal is one of the cheapest countries in EU to live. Salaries vary depending on where you teach – in the city you can expect to earn much more than what you would if working in towns in the north of Portugal where jobs are plentiful. The majority of teachers are employed for 9/10 month periods mainly because after 12 months teachers are entitled to an extra month’s pay.
The climate in Portugal is excellent and the country is rich in history so there will be plenty of things to see and do during your time there. Going out is affordable and the average Portuguese spends about €150 a month on food and drink and buying food at markets in coastal areas and in the countryside is cheaper than buying from supermarkets in cities. There are many opportunities to teach English across Portugal and with its relatively low living costs and beautiful climate it is a very desirable place to live and work!
