Teaching English in Romania

Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Romania can be difficult. While there is certainly a great desire to learn English within the country largely due to recent foreign investments, state schools can rarely afford to hire native English speakers. If you wish to teach in Romania you will need to apply for a work permit from the Ministry of Employment and Social Security and pay a $200 processing fee. You will need both a TEFL certificate and a university degree in order to teach in the country.
Wages are low and those just starting out can expect to earn about €160 a month. Fortunately accommodation is often provided but if this is not the case then it is likely that renting a living space will take up a significant proportion of your wages. Your salary would be equivalent to that of a Romanian teacher so it is, of course, possible to live on the wage you are paid but not if you want to live a life full of western luxuries.
Living costs are generally lower than in most countries with the exception of accommodation in Bucharest which is expensive when compared to the average wage and also, the standard of accommodation is not the same as it is in the West. However, teaching can be a pleasant experience with younger students eager to learn English as well as being curious about Western life. Teaching materials are in short supply in Romania so it would be a good idea to equip yourself with as many relevant books, magazines, photos, etc as you can before you arrive in the country.
