Teaching English in Sweden

Finding work in Sweden can be difficult. Without previous teaching experience it can be hard to find work in the state universities across Sweden especially as advertisements for teaching posts are rarely seen. However, the Folkuniversitetet of Sweden has run a scheme since 1955 which offers between five and ten teaching posts for nine month periods to native English speakers. There is the opportunity to teach across Sweden in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Lund, Uppsala and Umea.

A minimum of 14,000 SEK is paid by the Folkuniversitetet which is a suitable wage for living on but saving can be tough as teachers in Sweden pay tax – the Folkuniversitetet estimates that teachers will lose 30% of their wages to tax. £8-£10 per hour is a likely wage.

Meeting the locals can be costly as going for a drink and eating out are both expensive activities. Independence is certainly a requirement for living in Sweden, particularly in the north where the seven months of winter means that the locals generally retreat into their homes. However, those interested in winter sports such as skiing will find plenty on offer and can take advantage of the law that grants people free access to the countryside and explore Sweden’s beautiful landscapes.
