Teaching English in Taiwan

Taiwan is an attractive option for many English teachers due to the good wages and cheap cost of living and due to the demand for English teachers finding a job is reasonably easy. A number of major organisations hire overseas so your interview could be conducted over phone but you may be required to travel out to the country. In Taipei the majority of language teachers are North American which is the preferred nationality of teacher for many English learners in Taiwan - a result of US-Taiwanese links. However, British nationals shouldn’t worry about finding work as most employers won’t care about your accent as long as you conduct yourself appropriately.
Many schools will offer some level of help with finding accommodation. Living in Taipei can be expensive so most teachers live further away and commute into the city. You needn’t worry too much about crime in Taiwan as it is virtually crime-free so you can enjoy the thriving social scene to its full extent. Eating out is cheap and is a great way to meet the locals who you will find to be some of the kindest people you will ever come across – if you are offered a drink then they won’t take no for an answer!
While the pollution in the cities can be truly horrible and the driving can be terrifying (it is recommended that you keep off the roads and use public transport instead!) the country really is beautiful. There is the Taroko National Park in the North, the scenic East Coast with its exotic beaches and impressive cliffs and a wealth of culture for you to explore throughout the entire country.
