Teaching English in Ukraine

There is an increasing demand for English in Ukraine and with few native English speaking teachers in the country, there are many positions available for TEFL teachers. The economy has recently been growing after the country suffered greatly as a result of the collapse of the Soviet Union but a significant amount of the population still live in poverty and unemployment is high in the country. If you are motivated by money then Ukraine isn’t the place to go – wages are low and living conditions are not as good as in the rest of Eastern Europe but Ukraine has a lot to offer in terms of history, culture and friendly people.
If you have a TEFL certificate it shouldn’t be too much trouble finding work but it is still possible, albeit more difficult, to find work without qualifications. The majority of jobs exist in the capital, Kiev, but there are also some available elsewhere in the country in other cities. It is possible to go into the country with a tourist visa and get it changed but the amount of red tape involved in this can be incredible so you may want to sort out a visa first of all. If you have a found a job through the international press then the school will likely arrange your visa.
An average monthly salary for someone with little experience is £300 - £600 but more highly qualified teachers may earn more. You will also have the option of teaching private lessons to help towards your living costs. Wages are low but they should be adequate to get by on.
