TEFL or CELTA?

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)?
Whether a TEFL or CELTA qualification is the better option for you entirely depends on your situation. It’s not as simple as one being better than the other. Here is a basic run-through of the differences between each and what to consider when deciding what qualification is best for you.
A CELTA course is advisable, usually necessary, for work in colleges and universities and for people who are looking to make EFL teaching their career, but a TEFL qualification is a good starting point and more appropriate for those who are looking to work abroad for a shorter amount of time. If you have never done any EFL teaching a weekend TEFL course can be a great way of determining whether it’s right for you without committing yourself to spending quite a lot of money and putting an entire month aside.
Unlike CELTA courses, which are run as part of the University of Cambridge, there is not a single independent accrediting body which governs what courses run by TEFL providers should contain. However, TEFL providers can be accredited by a number of bodies and TEFL Scotland is currently accredited by four separate bodies including the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority). One of the biggest differences between the CELTA and TEFL is the length of time it can take to get your qualification. You can get your first TEFL Scotland qualification in a single weekend (20 hours) but a CELTA course runs full-time for four or five weeks. There is also a significant difference in prices with a CELTA course costing over £1000 and a 100-hour TEFL certificate costing £329 with TEFL Scotland, for example.
A good TEFL course provider should have independent accreditation, international recognition and good connections to help you find work once you get your qualification. Find out more about TEFL Scotland here.
