TEFL in China
Posted by Tim McCann - 15:23 on 01 June 2012
The number of TEFL jobs on offer is quite staggering. The Chinese people's thirst for English is seemingly unquenchable and this demand can be borne out by the number of TEFL teaching jobs currently being advertised on the TEFL Jobs Centre website.
You can find a TEFL job in just about any part of this vast country and choose to stay for a few months or plump for a longer contract of up to a year. Despite the global economic slowdown, of which China is not immune, the nation's recognition of mastering the English language as a key to its continued economic dominance is undiminished.
TEFL teaching jobs here are varied and although the pay isn't always the best in the global TEFL jobs market, many positions often come with housing provided, bonus schemes and a flight ticket allowance, among other benefits all of which are listed on our jobs pages.
You'll find work teaching in both state-run public schools in addition to private language centres. Teaching positions are available countrywide, mainly in cities of varying sizes from Shanghai and Beijing to Inner Mongolia in Baotou, an industrial city that seems to rise from nowhere in the midst of the vast Mongolian grasslands.
Working in China offers the TEFL teacher the opportunity to teach English in well-run schools while experiencing a vastly different culture and landscape to that of back home. This huge country is home to a fascinating and colourful history that can be seen all around through ancient monuments in the cities you'll work in and beyond to the Great Wall of China snaking for hundreds of miles from west to east along the country's northern flanks.
With so many TEFL jobs in China to choose from, make finding the one for you a project. Research each school carefully before deciding which job offer to accept and get the view of TEFL teachers already working out of China for their tips and advice. In fact, you could start off by reading the the views and experiences of former TEFL Scotland candidates who have gone on to forge successful careers as TEFL teachers, many of whom can be found teaching English in China. “"TEFL has changed my life....an ambition that i wanted to fulfil for some 20 years or so. It is my passion! Can't wait to meet my prospective students...no matter which land! It has also taught me Grammar which I never learned in School. I would also love to open a school here in the East of Scotland through TEFL! We need it! Can't wait until I get my other two qualifications!"” Caroline Fraser, Edinburgh
