Dubai is part of a federation of seven emirates or states known as the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Emirates enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world in a relatively crime free environment. It is undoubtedly a fascinating place to teach English abroad.

TEFL opportunities

Many TEFL teachers are attracted to the Dubai by the prospects of lucrative pay. In general the Middle East and the UAE have some of the most enviable TEFL contacts on offer in the world. The benefits that come with a job teaching English in Dubai are numerous. Your TEFL salary is around £12,000-25,000 and you can also expect paid airfares and generous holidays. Accommodation is also often included and can be rather luxurious. As Dubai is an Islamic country, do be sensitive with how you conduct yourself and the course content you teach in order not to offend.

Living in Dubai

Dubai’s coastline runs thirty kilometres along the Arabian Gulf. You can expect the sun to shine all year round and at times it gets seriously hot. At the peak of summer temperatures rise to 50°C with high humidity. October through to March is seen as the most comfortable time to visit as it is hot during the day, around 25°C, and cools down in the night.
There are some challenging cultural differences living in the UAE compared to what you are used to in the west. Dubai however is more tolerant than much of the Middle East towards other backgrounds. Single woman will find that they do not have quite the same range of work available to them but has fewer restrictions than working in places such as Saudi Arabia. If you are ambitious and financially motived, with the correct TEFL qualification you should be able to find work teaching English in Dubai.

Requirements

It helps if you are experienced in the world of TEFL and have university degree in order to secure work in Dubai. You will need an official TEFL Scotland certificate to show that you are qualified to teach English abroad. We would recommend taking no less than 120 hours of TEFL training to ensure that you impress employers and are eligible to apply for the widest range of TEFL Jobs.
