The TEFL Crunch
Posted by Joe Hallwood - 18:17 on 08 April 2009
There is a lot of doom and gloom about as the recession kicks in, in fact that is all you seem to hear about in the news. I guess this sounds a bit smug, but it’s not all bad news, in a way!
On the weekend courses, we are having an increasing number of people who have been made redundant and are looking for a way to ride the recession. One guy on the Glasgow course in January, Michael, is an architect, who was laid off since people are not buying or building houses at the moment. Rather than spend the next year or so working in something dull and unrelated to what he is trained to do, he decided to get a new skill, teaching English.
Michael saw his redundancy as an opportunity. An opportunity to travel, earn money and gain new skills. He’s off to Japan with us fairly soon and really looking forward to it. Teaching in Japan will not only give him a great travel experience, but will also make certain that he has filled the gap in his CV with something useful.
Michael is just one of a number who are looking to treat redundancy in as positive a way as possible. Learning new skills, having a positive gap fill in your CV, earning some money and having an unforgettable travel experience
