TEFL Jobs - Volunteering
Posted by Tim McCann - 13:21 on 25 May 2012
As more countries across the world open their doors to English language teaching, the more opportunities arise to volunteer your services as a TEFL teacher in some of the most exotic and exciting locations.
While it's true, you won't make your fortune as a volunteer TEFL teacher, it does offer riches by way of giving you the opportunity to improve and develop your English teaching expertise in locations off the well-trodden TEFL circuit. Often these teaching jobs are for short periods making the prospect of volunteer teaching ideal for those in a gap year or thinking of working abroad during the summer months between university terms.
Volunteer TEFL teaching jobs often mean your role will be to assist class teachers in both private language schools and even universities. Usually this involves helping students with their conversational English and taking part in activities beyond the classroom environment.
There's no doubt volunteering can be a challenging experience as you find yourself working sometimes in schools with limited resources. This is more than compensated through the reward TEFL teachers get from helping children and young adults master English and so enhance their chances in life to find a wider range of jobs.
Some volunteer TEFL teaching jobs are run by humanitarian agencies who are involved in helping fight poverty in the host country. Take one of the current vacancies TEFL Scotland is advertising in Tanzania, where you'll be working for an NGO helping orphaned children escape from a life living on the streets.
Cross the Atlantic and you'll also find plenty of volunteer TEFL teaching programmes in south and central America. Many schools here also offer the chance to earn money through private lessons in addition to the volunteer teaching you undertake.
While a volunteer TEFL teaching job will provide you with food and accommodation, you will need to stump up airfares and have access to enough funds to see you through your stay. You'll also need to by physically fit and able to face up to the challenges of working in often demanding conditions. The work, though, is rewarding and provides you with a unique opportunity to not only travel and work in some of the most interesting locations in the world, but also to make a difference to the lives of the students you'll be teaching.

“"TEFL has changed my life....an ambition that i wanted to fulfil for some 20 years or so. It is my passion! Can't wait to meet my prospective students...no matter which land! It has also taught me Grammar which I never learned in School. I would also love to open a school here in the East of Scotland through TEFL! We need it! Can't wait until I get my other two qualifications!"” Caroline Fraser, Edinburgh
