About the ESOL course
Created as an introduction to TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), the ESOL course is for anyone who wishes to teach English to people who do not have English as their first language and are currently living in the UK.
Who takes this course?
Previous experience or qualifications are not needed for this course. You will be introduced to the essential knowledge that is needed to work with ESOL learners.
The course is targeted towards anyone who is new to ESL and teaching for the first time but also appropriate for any teachers who have ESOL learners in their classes as well as those in Community Learning Development who work with or are responsible in some way for ESOL learners.
What will I learn?
On completion of this Unit, you will be able to:
1. Explain factors affecting ESOL learning
2. Identify lexical, grammatical and phonological features of the English language.
3. Describe language skills.
4. Explain factors affecting language selection in ESOL tutoring.
What is the qualification?
The course is the first of two units that comprise the PDA (Personal Development Award) Introduction to Tutoring ESOL.
This Unit is Language and Learning in ESOL and is an SQA accredited course. Currently, we do not deliver Unit 2 of this PDA.
How does the ESOL course work?
- The course is completely web-based and includes online resources, activities and assignments which will take you through the course.
- An online tutor will assess your assignments and help you through the course.
- While you will not be graded on activities and assignments, the marks you receive will indicate your progress.
You will have 4 final assessments that will determine whether you pass the course.
• 2 written assessments submitted to TEFL Scotland for assessment
• 2 invigilated exams to be taken at test centres in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Inverness.
Examination dates will be set throughout the year.
What is the difference between the ESOL course and the TEFL course?
- The ESOL course is designed to take you roughly 30 hours and is therefore shorter than the online TEFL course.
- The ESOL course is centred on learners living and working in the UK and the issues and difficulties they may encounter.
- If you have already done the 50-hour online TEFL course you will find many parts of the ESOL course familiar.
Starting the course
Firstly, you need to enrol and take the ESOL Application test in order to check that your English is good enough to complete the course. You DO NOT pay anything at this stage.
Once you have received notification of passing the application test and you have paid your course fee (ILA accounts accepted) we'll email you details to start the ESOL course.
Give the ESOL Application test a go, there is no commitment.

- Your course tuition
