What do these TEFL positions in Kenya entail?
In these TEFL volunteering positions, you would be based in a small community on a 60,000 acre community ranch that has strong links with the local people. With extensive recent droughts in the area, diversifying the economy of the local area is important and one method of doing so is through learning English to help with trade. English can open up many new opportunities for the local people, who have previously had very little influence from the outside world.
The ranch runs several community and conservation projects and the English lessons run by a volunteer English teacher would be contributing to the development of these by helping remove language barriers for the community. At present, the level of education and healthcare is very low in the local area with only a handful of the community speaking English.
Two nursery schools have been built in the community and there are plans for a primary school as the local community realise the potential benefits of young people continuing with schooling. Currently, there are few educational opportunities for children and the nearest primary school is too far away to walk, so this is a chance to make a real difference to the future prospects of local children.
A further avenue for support would be with the local women’s enterprise group, where ladies in the community create jewellery, usually from recycled materials, that is sold to visitors to the ranch. At present, a translator is needed to help with transactions and having ability in English would allow the women to take control of their own finances and interactions with customers. In both this and related health projects, the ladies of the community very keen to communicate and would greatly benefit from English lessons.
These volunteering positions would be best suited to someone happy to escape the hustle and bustle of the contemporary life, as there is no television, internet or mobile phone reception here! However, if you want a chance to experience the real unspoilt Africa, this is the opportunity of a life time!
