Teaching English in Egypt

Finding Work
Cairo is the main city in the Egyptian economy therefore finding work outside of the capital can be difficult. Some jobs do require travel throughout Egypt, for instance, with journalism and development work.
Cairo offers many teaching opportunities to a TEFL teacher and some of the best salaries in North Africa. Institutes usually do require a TEFL certificate and if you have any experience in teaching Business English or to Young Learners, you will be well on your way to finding work. The country is has far fewer restrictions for woman than other Muslim countries in the Middle East which makes the country far more accessible for any woman in search of employment here.

It is worth doing some research before heading out to the country. Look online for institutes/schools/colleges etc. and try and arrange an interview for when you get there.

The Teaching
Egypt’s education system is divided into three sectors – Public Education, University and Higher Education and Al Azhar Education ( 4 years primary stage, 3 years preparatory stages and 3 years secondary stage).
Teachers are sought for all of these sectors. There are also opportunities for employment in multinational companies, teaching English to their employees. Therefore, teaching can range from primary levels to adult, depending on where you apply.

Teaching hours are usually 8 or 9 hours per day. This could be either in morning, afternoon or evening.

The average pay is around 2,700 EGP per month.

Living
Islam is the main religion in the country, you have to respect it. Wear decent clothes when going about town (at the beach wear whatever you like). Cover your knees and shoulders when entering religious places.
Although Egypt is a very popular touristy place and many locals do know some English, learn some basic Arabic before heading out. At least “hello”, “goodbye” and “thank you” to begin with. It’s only fair.
Although the large cities like Cairo and Alexandria can be very friendly places, bare in mind that like all large cities there are places where foreigners should not go. Ask your local Embassy or school where you are working. Pick pocketing is common so don’t carry around too many valuables when out and about. Women should be careful when going out at night. It is always best to go in a group. The men can be overly charming and an innocent smile could turn into something unwanted.
