History
Argentina was partly conquered by the Inca Empire. European explorers arrived in Argentina in 1516 establishing it as the Vice-royalty of Peru. Between 1814 and 1817, Gerneral Jose de San Martin defeated royalist forces in Chile and Peru, thus liberating Argentina. The 1970s was an era called the “Dirty War” when the country was under dictatorship. Thousands of dissidents disappeared during this time. In 1982, the country's defeat by the British in the Falklands War led to free elections the following year. In 2001 the country suffered from a huge econmic crash which resulted in the Argentine peso going from 1-1 ratio with the U.S dollar to a 3-1 ratio. This resulted in a 25% unemployment figure and extremely low wages. The country is now enjoying economic growth but with high inflation.
