History
During the 6th century, the Czech Republic was inhabited by Germanic and Celtic tribes. It was known as Bohemia. There were many rulers and kings in Bohemia up until the 19th century. Following the reign of Charles IV, Prague grew into one of the largest cities in Europe. The reign of Emperor Rudolf II made the country very prosperous and vast collections of art and artists were established there.
Bohemia then became part of the Austrian Empire and after World War I, it declared its independence as Czechoslovakia. During World War II, large parts of the country were seized by the Nazis. After the war, Czechoslovakia was re-established as being independent and soon became a communist country. By 1992, the country had a peaceful splitting and divided in two. One being the Czech Republic and the other being Slovakia. In 2004, the Czech Republic entered in the European Union.
