History
France is the only country in Europe to face both the North Sea and the Mediterranean. This has resulted in France being influenced by a rich variety of culture. It was originally inhabited by Celts Gauls who settled up until 125 B.C when the Roman Empire invaded. France too has been an invader, expanding its empire into Africa, South America, the Middle East and South East Asia.
Geography
Borders – Andorra, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain and Switzerland.
Land features - Northern France is mainly flat, the northeast and east is mountainous and south and central France is more hilly.
Climate – cool winters and mild summers, Mediterranean France – mild winters and hot summers.
Culture
Architecture – France is famed for its beautiful buildings and architecture. Gothic architecture can be found in cathedrals and other religious places.
Literature – French literature dates back to the middle ages and many great writers and poets have been internationally recognised. Some important writers include Alexandre Dumas, Charles Baudelaire and Victor Hugo.
Sport – France is well know for its sporty culture. Popular sports include football, cycling, rugby and basketball.
