TEFL in Prague

The U.K. economy was in poor shape with no sign of improvement. My contracts were drying up due to the financial crisis. I had been in this situation before but this crisis seemed more severe, with no sign of recovery in the near future, so the decision was made to pack up and move to my fiancée’s home country of The Czech Republic, Prague to be precise. I have to say that it was not the most difficult decision I ever had to make, as I had been in Prague on many occasions over the last decade and liked the city and its culture very much.

We quickly sourced a flat with the obvious advantage that my girlfriend is Czech. That said, there are several agencies and websites that specialize in dealing with expats and accommodation.

I applied for an interview and got a call a couple of days later and was asked to attend a first interview, which went well and was asked to attend a second interview for which I had to prepare a lesson. This interview also went well as the TEFL course had taught me well in lesson preparation. They offered me a job I was happy to take during the first month, and as I was finding my feet the school was very helpful and supportive. I also found that the workshops dealing with teaching groups and Business English etc were very helpful. The school has a resource centre with a library, photocopiers and internet. They also have a good social scene with monthly teacher parties.

I have been teaching in Prague now since February and have grown as a teacher and a person. Prague has a very good public transport infrastructure with metro bus and trams, which enable inexpensive movement around a beautiful city. There are so many museums, restaurants, pubs, theatres and music clubs, so if you would like or need a change, you should definitely consider Prague.
