History
Peru has had many cultures dating back to 9000 BC. The most notable of these are the Incas who formed the largest empire in pre-Colombian America.
In 1532, conquistadores invaded the country and defeated the Inca Emperor imposing Spanish rule. Ten years later, the country was declared the Vice-royalty of Peru which encompassed most South American colonies. Eventually Peru gained its national identity and independence in the 19th Century.

Borders with – Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador
Land features - There are three main regions in Peru - the coast is mainly arid with flat plains, the highlands are the Andean mountainous regions, the jungle is a large expanse of flat terrain covered by the Amazon rainforest.
Climate – the coast has moderate temperatures whereas the highlands are rainy and humid, the jungle has heavy rainfall and high temperatures.
Culture
Peru is rich with culture and tradition. Artistic traditions date back to pre-Incan cultures with pottery, sculpture and jewellery.
Architecture in pre-Colombian times is highly regarded such as the colossal Inca city of Machu Picchu
Peruvian cuisine is a mixture of Amerindian and Spanish food. Due to Peru’s diverse climates, a large range of plants and animal are available for cooking – even guinea pigs!
