History
Russia, over the centuries, has been the target of many invaders such as the Goths and Huns. The Mongols eventually took over the country for over 200 years. By the 17th century, Russia was still medieval in outlook and culture. By the beginning of the 20th century, the destructive war between Japan and Russia pushed the country into Revolution, making a Soviet nation which lasted for over seven decades. In 1990, Russia established the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Geography
Russia is the largest country in the world. It stretches from Eastern Europe to Western Europe and has an extremely diverse climate.
Borders with – Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and Korea.
Climate – The temperature in Russia can range from -40°C to 40°C in different regions. However, throughout the country, there are really only 2 distinct seasons which are winter and summer. Winters can be extremely cold and summers, even in Siberia, can be hot and humid.
Culture
Music – Russia’s music is influenced by its large range of ethnic groups. It is famed for its classical composers and ballet, such as Tchaikovsky who wrote Swan Lake and the Nutcracker.
Literature – Famed for being among the most developed and influential in the world with writers such as Chekov and Pushkin.
Sport – Russia is successful in a wide range of sport. Most notably in tennis, ice skating, football and ice hockey.
