Visas in South Korea
Anybody working without a visa in Korea faces fines and deportation.
Your visa has to be pre-approved and issued before you can leave for Korea. After finding an employer you can start the visa application process. The immigration authorities in Korea will need you to send them all your documents including CV, degree, transcripts, etc. The processing of this can take up to ten days after which an issue number will be given to your employer who will send on to you. These documents then need to be forwarded on to the Korean Embassy in your home county who can then take 5 days to process them.
Your Visa will entitle you to 12 months legal work in Korea. Your visa does not entitle you to freelance teaching and if you are caught doing this it can (and will) lead to fines or deportation. The high rates of pay for private tuition do prove a temptation for many teachers, even the law abiding ones. Illegally working has recently become very risky as Koreans who inform the authorities about illegal workers are now offered rewards.
